Some proposal locations in Sydney are instantly recognisable, while others feel like hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Clark Island is one of those rare places. Located in the heart of Sydney Harbour and surrounded by sparkling water, city views, and peaceful natural beauty, it offers one of the most unique settings for a proposal, engagement photography session, intimate wedding, or elopement.
Youhan reached out well in advance to plan a private proposal for his partner, Sydney. They wanted something intimate, meaningful, and away from the usual crowds. Rather than choosing a popular lookout or beach, he selected Clark Island, a location I had never photographed before but had always been curious about.
What made their story even more memorable was learning that both Youhan and Sydney are Assyrian and speak Aramaic. It was a privilege to witness such an important chapter in their lives and document a moment that was deeply personal to them.
On the day, the couple enjoyed a picnic on the island while I made my way across Sydney Harbour via water taxi, kindly arranged by Youhan. As soon as I arrived, I understood why this location felt so special. Calm water surrounded the island, the afternoon sun cast a beautiful glow across the harbour, and the atmosphere felt completely removed from the city despite being only minutes away. A few very enthusiastic birds made sure everyone knew I had arrived, adding a little unexpected entertainment to the afternoon.
I kept my gear light and stayed flexible, allowing the proposal to unfold naturally. When the moment finally arrived, everything came together perfectly. The harbour backdrop, peaceful surroundings, and genuine emotion created a proposal that felt intimate and timeless. After Sydney said yes, we explored Clark Island and captured beautiful engagement photographs across the open lawns, waterfront edges, and harbour viewpoints.
One of the things I loved most about this session was that the story did not end there.
After leaving Clark Island, we headed into the city and continued their engagement session at the State Library of New South Wales. The contrast between the two locations worked perfectly. Clark Island provided natural scenery and harbour views, while the State Library offered elegant architecture, grand sandstone details, historic interiors, and timeless European inspired aesthetics.
For couples planning engagement sessions, weddings, elopements, or pre wedding photography in Sydney, the State Library of NSW is one of the most underrated photography locations in the city. The heritage architecture and sophisticated atmosphere create a refined backdrop that suits luxury wedding photography, editorial engagement sessions, and couples who love a classic and timeless look. It pairs beautifully with nearby locations such as the Royal Botanic Garden, Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, Sydney Harbour, and the historic streets surrounding Macquarie Street.
Combining Clark Island with the State Library gave us two completely different looks within the same session. One offered natural harbour beauty, while the other brought elegance, architecture, and old world character. Together they created a gallery that felt diverse, romantic, and uniquely Sydney.
I am incredibly grateful to have documented Youhan and Sydney’s proposal and discover a location I had always wanted to photograph. It was a beautiful afternoon filled with genuine emotion, stunning scenery, and two locations that deserve far more attention from couples planning proposals, engagement shoots, weddings, and elopements in Sydney.
